The Mormon religion has been finding itself the topic of more and more mainstream discussions as time goes on, and this is due to a number of factors. Of course, Mitt Romney's candidacy for the American Presidential office has led to great scrutiny of the faith, but there have been some other significant cultural examples of the religion, as well. Although polygamy has been absent from the official LDS religion for well over 100 years, there are some sects of people who feel that the church strayed away from its true calling by denouncing the practice. These people practice the Mormon religion with polygamy as a central aspect, and they are becoming increasingly more prevalent in the media. One polygamist family even has its own show ? TLC's Sister Wives.

Sister Wives follows the lives and struggles of a polygamist family headed by Kody Brown. Kody practices what is known as fundamentalist Mormonism, and he has a total of four wives and 17 children. During the first season, the show depicted the family in Lehi, Utah, but since then, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada as a means of avoiding prosecution for their lifestyle. The first season depicts the normalcy of the family unit, while contrasting it with the unusual nature of their beliefs and lifestyle choices. Though the season began with Kody being married to three wives, one of the first season's major story lines is his courtship of and eventual marriage to wife number four.

The Brown family believes that by showing themselves on Sister Wives, they can have an impact on how the public views them and their faith. While people certainly tune into the show to see a family that is completely different from their own, they also cannot help but remark at how much they have in common with the Browns, in spite of the polygamous nature of the family. There are, obviously, many differences between the Browns' lives and the lives of ordinary people, but the show depicts them as a fairly average family.

Sister Wives is currently in the midst of its third season on TLC, and fans of the show continue to tune in each week to see what types of drama the polygamist Brown family will experience. The family members are unique and relatable, which is why the show has become so popular, but there is always the possibility of new people joining the family. With this formula, Sister Wives could conceivably go on for many more seasons.
