She's Gotta Have It

"A Seriously Sexy Comedy"

She’s Gotta Have It is a romantic drama comedy written and directed by Spike Lee. The films features Tracy Camilla Johns, John Canada Terrell, Tommy Redmond Hicks, Ernest Dickerson and S. Epatha Merkerson. The story follows Nola (played by Tracy Camilla Johns) as a mythological, modern day seductress who rarely leaves her small apartment. Both males and females are only too willing to participate in sexual escapades with her.

She honestly enjoys sex in an honest and easy way and makes no secret of her many open relationships. She most frequently sees Jamie (played by Tommy Redmond Hicks), an honest guy. Then she sees Greer (played by John Canada Terrell) who is a model. Finally, she sees bike messenger, Mars (played by writer-director Spike Lee).

Each of the men in her life would prefer to be her only one. For example, a frustrated Jamie chases Nola through New York’s streets longingly. She is unabashedly who she is, falling asleep while waiting for one of her lovers, Greer to fully undress. One of her suitors, Mars actually leaves his sneakers on during intimate moments. None of this seems to phase Nola, save a slight bit of annoyance.

One man who tries unsuccessfully to pick up the worldy Nola turns her off when he wipes his nose with his hand, blissfully unaware of how uncouth he appears.

During Nola's birthday when she celebrates with Jamie, he puts a trick candle on her cake. Then she has a nightmare that includes these flames engulfing her bed. Out of fear of destruction, she decides to become celibate, with the goal of having just one man in her life.

However, her vow of celibacy does not last as soon as she discovers that this is not who she is or really wants to be. In the end, she has resigned herself to the true reality, admitting that were she to try to live that way, she would only be fooling herself, and unsuccessfully.
