"Discover the Adventure Behind the Greatest Mystery of Our Time."

The animated musical Anastasia is a classic film that offers something for everyone. It's easy for girls of all ages to fall in love with the idea of a lost princess. The villain Rasputin is truly one of the creepiest and darkest villains in cartoon format. His physical characteristics are similar to the same legendary historical figure he is based on. The original Rasputin was reported to have magical healing powers--though perhaps not quite the sorcerer that his animated counterpart is made out to be.

Part of the allure of the film Anastasia is the mystery surrounding the actual course of events of this story; including appearance of a woman claiming to be the lost Romanov princess who was presumed dead. This claim led to wide speculation and several books and movies to be made regarding the rumors that a member of the royal family was indeed alive. The animated version describes the disappearance of the young princess in a believable manner which sets up the rest of the story for her return.

The main part of the story takes place some ten years after the Russian revolution. Rumors are abounding throughout the town of St. Petersburg that the dowager empress is searching for her granddaughter, and offering a hefty reward for her discovery and return. Con men Dimitri and Vladimir are determined to find a girl to play the royal princess and present her to the empress in order to get the reward. They meet a young woman with a mysterious past who goes by the name of "Anya". What the audience knows at this point but none of the characters do is that Anya is in fact the princess Anastasia but that she does not remember who she really is.

The characters encounter multiple obstacles in their journey to meet the dowager empress. Villain Rasputin attempts to stall them at every turn, his hatred for the Romanov family consuming him to the bitter end. Dimitri is the first to realize that what started out as a con has turned into something more but has difficulty expressing it due to his own secretive past. In the end the characters ultimately get what they want, but not necessarily what they thought they were looking for.

The fine artwork depicting the lavish lifestyle of the royal family is incredibly well done and detail oriented. The designs of not only the characters themselves but the background at the palace and clothing styles cause the viewer to really get a feel for the life that the characters left behind.
